The mafia had never used the word godfather until Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola made it popular in the movie "The Godfather"

now it is used all the time...

  1. It is hard to say "never" in this context;  but while I can readily accept the metaphor from someone of Puzo's standing, it does seem unlikely that the untutored, savage beasts that were and are the Mafia could have exercised such an intellectual leap.

  2. I say....probably true.

  3. Are you sure you're not confusing it with the fact that the word "mafia" was never used in "The Godfather"?

  4. definitely true

  5. False.

  6. I'd say it was false; despite the image a former poster mentioned of brutal killers, which I am not denying, the mafia familys have always been that; familys. They also originated from the highly religious capital of Catholicism; Italy. These two elements of the Mafia would provide a good enough reason for the Title of "Godfather" being placed on someone of importance.
