I applied to the ttc late july 2008. I am curious to know how long it takes for them to call you for an interview, since there are so many applicants. Is there an average time weeks, months, etc.. and what is the hiring process. thanks so much.

  1. Congratulations on embarking on a journey that will take approximately 8 months of your life, then 29 years to retirement!

Based on your qualifications and experience, you should recieve a letter in the mail about 6-8 weeks after your sent your application down, requesting a phone interview.  This letter will instruct you to call on a specific day and time.  Be sure to follow these instructions!

The phone interview will consist of several customer service related questions, so that the TTC can sort of "feel you out".  You want to tell them what they want to hear, without making it look like you're telling them what they want to hear.  I know, easier said than done.  Based on your reponses to the phone interview, this will warrant if you are invited to the information session or not.

The information session, again, is on a set date and time.  Be sure again to follow the instructons that will be included with the letter you recieve from TTC.  The information session will give you a good introduction to the job of Transit Operator.  Don't worry, it's not as bad as they make it out to be.  Usually after the break, about 50 people don't come back, but do yourself a favor and stick it out.  There is a small test at the end of the session, so PAY ATTENTION!  This test will warrant you a one on one interview.

Should you get to the interview stage, you will be required to do a :Job Shadow" assignment.  Riding 10 different routes across the city, including the Yonge St. 320 bus and the Queen Night Car on a Friday or Saturday night.  Again , follow the instructions given to you on the assignement.   In case you have not noticed by now, FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS during this whole process is what this is all about.  The TTC want's to be sure you follow instructions.

After the interview, if all goes well, you'll have to go for the MTO Medical, at TTC's expense, and the TTC will check your Criminal Record, References, and they will check your Driver's Abstract again.  At this time, you will be put into the holding pool, and will be placed at a division according to need.  This means that you do not get a choice as to your mode, you will be placed in bus, streetcar, or subway where operators are needed.

The whole experience from date of application, to start date is approxiamately 8 months.  I wish you the best of luck, and hope to see you shadowing soon!

    Allan
