Question:

TV CRT safety mechanism help!?

i want to make a TV into an oscilloscope by just cutting off the verticle electro magnet from the power making only a horizontal line across the screen. but it has a safety mechanism which shuts off the TV if the wires are not connected. i have connected the wires together with no electro magnet between them and the same thing happens. i then used 4X 1M ohm resistors in series to create resistance between the two wires and it happens again.

i am sure i have the two wires that go to the same magnet because i connected them all up as normal then quickly cut one of the wires. this gave me a horizontal/vertical line across the screen before the safety mechanism kicked in. this told me which wire goes to which magnet, i done this for all of them.

how do i stop the mechanism from cutting in, please help.

  1. It's not practical.  You can't control the horizontal sweep frequency.  You can't trigger the sweep.  It would take some good circuit design to avoid damaging the TV and yourself, and you'd end up with a very poor oscilloscope.  You're better off getting some minimal hardware and software to use with your PC.  See the reference for one example.
