Question:

TV Converter Box Coupon Decision - Which box for the buck is best for me?

I only watch local stations (and very rarely) which can be picked up with rabbit ears. I just received my governmental coupon for $40.00 and wish to know which box you think would work best for me and where is the cheapest place to purchase it! I wish to spend the least amount of money above the coupon value yet receive the best value in a converter box. Knowledgeable help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  1. The link below shows a comparison of the features available for each box.

Pick the one you want and then google it to find the best deal.  most of the units are hard to find.  Walmart has the cheapest ones.

I think the best feature set is in the Apex Digital DT250.  There are web sites offering it for 52 and change, plus shipping.  But, they don't actually have any.  Best Buy has some intermittently, but gets $60 plus tax for them.

  2. I have a Zenith DTT900 that does a great job.  The picture it produces is better than an analog signal off the air.  The picture is crisp and clear.  Colors are solid and there's no noise in the picture.

I also have an Apex DT250 that doesn't do so well.  The picture is produces is worse than an analog signal.  The picture isn't crisp and sharp.  The colors are over-saturated, and there's noise in the picture.

No contest, get the Zenith.  The model DTT900 doesn't have analog feed through when it's off but the model DTT901 does if that's important.  It won't make any difference when the analog goes off the air this coming February.

  3. RCA Digital TV Converter Box, DTA800

  4. I purchased a Philco TB100HH9 converter box, and couldn't be happier with it.  It was on the list of Consumer Reports best buys (best picture quality) and that is why I picked it.  It cost me about $20 after applying my coupon.

Another good choice would be the Sansonic FT300A (also on the Consumer Reports list), and it is actually a bit cheaper than the other box.  It would be about $12-15 at most retailers (I bought online) after your coupon.

I'll send along a reprint of the Consumer Reports article if you'd like to read it for yourself.  It's from a third party site, as I do not believe Consumer Reports can be read unless you have a subscription.  Good luck to you, and I hope my answer helps.
