What does 1080ip and 480i and all that stuff mean?

  1. These are the vertical resolutions of the different modes supported by digital TV

    The "i" means interlaced. Each video frame is split into two fields. One contains the odd lines (1,3,5...) and the other the odd lines (2,4,6...). 480i is standard definition - same as old style analog TV. HDTV has a 1080i mode. Each field takes 1/60 sec to display.

    The "p" stands for progressive (also known as non-interlaced).  No odd/even field splitting is done here. Each frame take 1/60 second. HD modes are 480p, 720p and 1080p. 480 and 720 are available with broadcast TV. 1080p is only available with sources like BlueRay disc.
