My 78 year old mother-in-law spilled OJ on her remote while at the nursing home. I do not know how long it was on before her aide came and plucked out the batteries, but it probably wasn't more than a few minutes. I'm sure she was on the "call button" as soon as it happened, that TV is her lifeline to the world.
I cracked it open, cleaned up the dampened guts and put a fresh set of batteries in it when I put the assembly back together. I've had luck with this type of fix in the past, but this time not so. I checked the LED with my digital camera....no output.
There was some furry corrosion on a couple of the resistors and across a couple of the pins on the IC. I'm supposing that while wet, the OJ had enough of an electrolytic effect to induce a short circuit at such a current level that it fried something. I'm not going to chase down the PCBA with a voltmeter, it isn't worth my time. I just want something plausible to tell her.
I can get an OEM replacement but it will take time on eBay. I do not want to get one of those universal remotes with 50 buttons, heck, 20 buttons is about 10 times more than she can manage already.
