TV Squeals only when turned off?

Essentially, its an Emerson TV that a friend gave me. It sat unused for nearly a year in my garage before I decided to plug it in. When I finally got around to it, it started to squeal very high-pitched. When I turned it on, it grew quiet. When I unplug it, the sound continues for a few seconds but eventually stops.

  1. Sounds like a poltergeist. Get an exorcist quick.

  2. Sounds like the large filter capacitors at the power supply stage. When these get old the eloctrolytics shrink and cause the noise from not being connected properly anymore and all the transistors suffer from an unfiltered power supply. The reason for this is when the components heat up they expand an make a good connection, then it runs fine until you unplug it and it cools down and shrinks again.Eventually it will not connect anymore and youll have to find alike parts or make a really cool fish tank out of it.

  3. Get an estimate and see if the cost makes it worth repairing.  Don't poke around in a TV and risk your life.  Capacitors and cathode ray tubes can hold dangerous voltages even when the set is unplugged.

I do not care about the points what I care about is keeping people safe, alive and well.

  4. its because you're so ugly

  5. Sounds like a capacitor of some kind, you could pull the back off and blow it out really good with a large air compressor, but I wouldnt touch anything. Capacitors can hold enough of a charge to kill a human even when the tv is unplugged. But blowing it out will probably stop it.

  6. The squeal is the horizontal scanning frequency.  Any coil or transformer in the horizontal drive and output stages can develop bad solder connections or simply loosen up.  The deflection yoke can also cause this.  I heard to always use hot glue for this fix.  Get an insulated stick and poke around on the chassis until you locate the culprit, then cover it with hot glue.  I learned it from a man who had thirty years experience of repairing.  I read his answer to a question.  He told about doing that.  Somebody else asked this same question.  Alright?  OK!

  7. Well I mean you got it free so either deal with it or get a new tv.  Anymore it's not worth taking a tv in for repairs, but maybe you should try that.

  8. Time for an LCD tv!

I've had plenty of TVs that did this, and they usually died not long after.

  9. make sure there is no pig inside....

    SUUUYYYYEEEE

  10. Sounds like there is a bad cap in the power supply.  It will not last long before it blows the fuse on the main board.
