They keep advertising that all TV signals are going to go digital and no longer will have analog reception so something needs to be done if your TV doesn't have Cable or DirecTV.

  1. well, do you get cable through a company or an antenna?

if an antenna you need a converter box, if you already have a company you dont need to do anything

  2. You can get a coupon for a converter box, with mind it cost $30

  3. On February 17, 2009 all full power TV stations are required to turn off their analog transmitters - forever.  From then on they will be 100% digital.

This only affects people who get their TV from an antenna.  Cable and Satellite will not be affected.

Over The Air viewers will need either a new Digital TV or a converter box for their old style analog TV.  The boxes are available at major retailers (Target, WalMart, Radio Shack, etc.) for about $50 - $70.  The US government is giving consumers $40 coupons to help with the cost of the converter boxes.  A family can apply for no more than two at http://www.dtv2009.gov .

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

  4. Later on when they switch to digital, the government vows to help you actually pay for a converter box, so switching over to digital will be easier once it happens in 2009.

I don't exactly know how to go about getting a check from the government for a converter, but I'm sure when the time comes, they'll let us know.

I sure don't want to have to get rid of my big screen t.v., so I'll definitely be finding out!
