Question:

TV has cut to half screen and centered how to fix?

My neighbors TV which is a CRT has a problem, the picture is now smashed to half screen and is centered. So something’s wrong with the vertical part since horizontal looks just fine. I’m guessing it’s an IC or Capacitor if I knew which one I could change it. I’m very good with electronics and soldering circuits but I’m afraid not much experience with TV’s. So any ideas would be nice. Thanks

  1. I ditto everything Realist 2006 suggested.  I would like to add that you'd better make sure that the CRT anode is discharged along with most of the larger Electrolytic Capacitors on the main board before you begin.  I hope you have a Solder Pull-it or Sucker to remove the solder as oppose to just heating the connection and pulling the component out.  Do not reuse the old solder.  Good luck.

  2. If you are good with electronics then a place to start would be to do a block change of the electro capacitors in the vertical amp circuit ! this is quicker and cheaper than trying to remove and test each one as they are only cheap, this method will probably fix your fault as electro cap failure is the most common cause of vertical faults !.

To identify the vert amp follow the wires from the def yoke ( large coil assy on the tube neck ) the wires will join the main board close to the vert amp chip which will be mounted on a heat sink, various electro caps will be be in close proximity to this !!  .

Well that is plan A !!

If plan A fails then Plan B is to then replace the vert chip itself ! Check the vert amp chip for bad soldered joints as well.

If all this does not solve the problem it is time to get technical and maybe call on more experienced help !!! Happy soldering !!!

    Cheers Pete
