I was just wondering how many people would have owned/rented/had a TV in their household during the 1940s?

(GCSE media studies)

Google is useless!

  1. Extremely small. Although TV was invented around 1927, It was a new technology, the war got in the way, and then afterward TVs started getting into the market after factories retooled. Google is not all in all. Try Encyclopedia Britannica, a book. Libraries have lots of info in them!

  2. Learn to use Google efficiently.  A simple search for "television ownership 1940" brings up http://www.helium.com/items/525906-story... and many other sites.

This site will answer your question.

  3. Not a alot! TV was still very new and if you had one, you could count on neighbors 'dropping in' just at the time your favorite program was on. Most of the TV sets in the US were located in or around the New York area - there were no satellites or cable transmissions, so you had to be line-of-sight in order to pick up signals with rabbit ears. People watched some amazingly fuzzy stuff, just because it was so novel. By the late 40s TV was much more common.

  4. Very few if any at all. Most people didn't own a set until the fifties. It was America who had them about ten years before us. Try googling "Baird" Television.

  5. Wasn't it mothballed until after the war?

  6. Yes they were recorded but not accurately.  Only some households were reported just like some U.S.Censes reports were accurate.

  7. i was not aware t.v. was available in the 1940s in u/k and if it was then probably just within a few miles of alexandra palace in london b roadcast for a few hours per day / evening

  8. because of world war 2 there were no programs for most of the 40s so i expect owning a tv would be surplus to requirements!!you might be better off finding an older relative or neighbour to ask!!if people did own their own sets what did they do with them during the war???
