Question:

TV picture enlarged on certain channels?

My television (Toshiba 40XF355D) has recently developed a problem whereby the picture enlarges and the edges become distorted - but only on certain channels and only whilst programmes are on; the screen goes back to normal during ad breaks. I've called Sky and they have gone through all the possible problems but to no avail. I've looked in my TV manual too & have tried changing the settings but nothing appears to be working! I dont know if this is a problem with Sky or if it's my TV. Any ideas?

  1. With sky remote go to services....go to system set up.....go to no.1 picture settings.....go to video output and change it to PAL or if already PAL change it to RGB....I had a similar, but not identical problem and it worked for me....or maybe you have already done that.

  2. I HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEM. I THINK THAT IT IS A RECORDING FORMAT ON EACH PROGRAM OR ADVERT THAT IS ON.IT NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE DIGITAL TV WAS INTRODUCED.

I HAVE TRIED TV SETTINGS AND SKY BOX SETTINGS BUT NO USE. I NOTICE IT MORE ON SKY NEWS AND SKY SPORTS WHEN RESULTS ARE COMING IN.

IF YOU ARE STAYING ON THAT CHANNEL IT MAY BE WORTH PLAYING WITH SKY BOX.

  3. Most tv sets have an Aspect Ratio button on the remote. This lets you manually set the picture's aspect ratio to the one that best suits the programme.

For example, an episode of Only Fools and Horses is best watched in the 4:3 ratio instead of 16:9. You'll see black bars down the sides but at least Rodney and Del Boy will be right shape instead of short and fat, and round things will be proper circles instead of flattned or oval shaped.

One of the settings is "automatic". This means that the tv attempts to set the aspect ratio itself to suit the incoming programme. If it detects a 4:3 picture then it will fill the width of the screen and attempt to keep the geometry correct. This means that the top and bottom of the picture will be lost (the're outside of the frame).

Some broadcasters transmit a special signal with some of their programmes which the tv interprets as an instruction to set the aspect ratio (when it's in automatic mode). It is quite common for the picture shape to change during advertisments because the advertisers pay the broadcaster for a good service and if they (the broadcaster) get it wrong then they don't get paid (you, the viewer, don't really count).

What is probably happening to your tv is that this system is going wrong. If it's just Sky then check the SCART connectors.

See if you get random picture changes when viewing from all sources (DVD, Terrestrial digital, analogue, VHS, game console). If this happens then you have a fault.

Sorry I can't be more helpful without actually seeing the problem itself. Good luck.
