TV screen. All of a sudden today our TV picture started looking like a wide screen movie picture

All of a sudden today our TV picture started looking like a wide screen movie picture with blank bars across the top and bottom. Fairly quickly thereafter the picture condensed more and more from the top and bottom till now there is just a ribbon of light running across the center of the screen. What happened and it it fixable?
