  1. Your dad is right if you don't do the things listed below exactly how they are listed below.

Ok, first with scratching furniture. This is probably the hardest thing to train your cat not to do. Ok, first thing to do is to buy a scratching post that is as tall as your cat standing up. Next, monitor your cats behavior because the cat won't instinctively use the scratching post. Every time you see your cat using the furnature to scratch, say ahh but don't yell at your cat because that makes your cat dislike you. Pick your cat up and move her to the scratching post. Take her front paws and simulate scratching. After the first couple of weeks your cat will get the point.

TIP: Never yell at your cat because no matter how angry they get you because it will only make a grumpier cat.

Since you are getting a very young cat, your dad will be right about the cat possibly using the floor as a bathroom instead of the litter box. A litter box is an absolute must for cats. With this being said, there are ways of seeing your cat needing to go to the bathroom before she actually goes. If you are playing with your kitten and your kitten walks away, that is a sign that it has to eliminate. Another way is if you see your cat scratching the ground. If you see either of these signs, immediately take your cat to the litter box and simulate digging. Your cat will figure out that this is where it goes to the bathroom really fast. You may actually be a lucky one and your cat will instinctively use the litter box. If your cat ever goes on the ground remember the tip. This will be a companion of yours for a long time (talking about 15 years) and you don't want it to look at you as a bad guy.

TIP: Clean out your litterbox every other day (every day is preffered) because if a cat has too much doo doo in their bathroom they will find somewhere else in the house that they will eliminate at.

Ok, with the part about shedding hair everywhere, there isn't anything you can do about that. Cats shed but there are a few thingst that you can do that lowers the risk of cat hair all around your house. First is to buy a brush and spend five minutes everyday combing your cat. The comb will pick up most loose hair and prevent it from getting everywhere.

TIP: Doing this everyday reduces the risk of hairballs (which I know your dad won't like at all).

Before you get your cat, show your dad that you are responsible enough to own a cat. Also make sure that you are up to owning a cat. They are a long time commitment and you don't want to forget about them. If you aren't an animal person in general, I would do some serious thinking about owning a cat. They can give you many hardships but also times of great joy.

Remember to do your research on cats. Sounds like you have some yet to learn. I will post some sites that I used for my cat. Remember, a smart human is a happy pet.

  2. My sisters cat is  a tabby and doesn't do any of that she is a great friend to people and only scratches our carpet stairs. and it doesn't leave marks. we all love her and she is the best cat. even i like her and i hate cats and i am allergic to them!!! :) hope it helps!!!!!

  3. A cat's personality is only partly related to breed. Shedding depends on how long the cat's hair is, if you get a short hair tabby and brush it regularly, the hair wont be too much of a problem. You may want to sweeten the deal by promising to vacuum regularly after the cat.

Cat's are VERY finicky about where they poo, which is why they use litter boxes so easily. If you keep the litter box clean and smelling fresh, a cat will use it regularly. The only time they tend to poo elsewhere is if they feel the box is too full and disgusting for them to get near.

Lastly, scratching is a very behavioral-related issue. If your dad is really concerned, declawing is something to consider. Laser declawing is pricey, but it's the safest and most humane method that is used. There are many cats who have claws but never feel the need to scratch up furniture. If you can't tell what personality the cat has, buy lots of fun scratching toys so they will be able to get that urge out of their system in a place where it's allowed!

    Good luck!

  4. A tabby is usually a safe choice. Tortishells have attitude, and siamese are very vocal.

As far as shedding, scratching, and pooping goes, its a habbit. If you don't let it form, it won't be a problem.

Make sure you get him neutered by 4 months of age, or you may run into spraying problems.

    'Good luck!

  5. Well all cats will do it the thing to do is to train them, A kitten or puppy is like a child you have to give them direction. They have to to what they can and can not do. If you train your cat not to scratch the funiture and p**p in the litter box then you did your job as an owner

A few simple things you can do is get a scratching post and make it alluring to the Kittie with catnip. And make sure that the post is easily for them to get to, more then more or a play house is great from them

A litter box needs to be out of the way or a covered on is good to have also, keep it clean because Tabby s tend to be picky and if there litter box is not clean they will sometimes find some were else to go.

Show your Kittie were the litter box is and make sure you move there paws around in there, litter is important sometimes they may not like the litter, but most of the time its ok, I use litter with baking soda I think it smells less, Fresh Step is what I like. They have to know were the litter box is, normally it is a natural for them to go in the litter box, and tabby's are very smart it didn't take long for my Max to know were his litter was and how to use it.

Shedding is def going to happen with tabby's, short hair, med hair or long hair but I will tell you this I just got on not to long ago, from Pet Smart and it is the best thing I have ever spent money on its called The Fermantor its a brush and oh my gosh I have a short hair tabby and it pulled off enough hair to fill up a plastic wall mart bag I am not kidding, they are the best.

Good luck and rem a pet is a responsibility.

  6. ALL cats shed.  Keep any velvet dresses in plastic in the closet (trust me!).  Brushing and combing helps keep the hair at a manageable level.

All cats need to p**p too, but if they know where the box is and the box is clean there's usually no problems.

As for the furniture--they can be trained not to scratch that if they have an alternative thing they CAN scratch, but you have to be patient when teaching them this.

It's all part of owning a cat.

  7. If you get the cat spayed you shouldn't have any problems.  As far as scratching the furniture; buy a scratching post and put it in a room where the cat will hang out a lot.  Spray it with catnip mist. When you get home and she runs over and scratches the post, give her lots of praise!  And give her toys so she won't scratch other things.

Use a furminator on her fur (available at PetSmart) so she won't shed so much.  Also, allergy wipes (or just a wet cloth) and brushing would help a lot.

Use a scoopable cat litter that smells OK.  Get scented, but be careful.  I just bought a 40 lb tub of litter at Costco and can't stand the smell.  Otherwise, I usually never smell it on her.

Also, think of how you will care for this cat once you move out.  Will you be able to keep her?  Pets are responsibilities and it does cost money.  Please consider all options.

  8. I hate to tell you, but your dad is right.  My cats shed all the time, especially on the new carpet which we have to vacuum every other day.  Cats will do all that you said and more.  But you could offer to buy a scratching post for it so it doesn't use the furniture, and offer to vacuum up the floors from hair, fed him, and pick up after him too.  It will show you have responsibility

  9. it depends on what you teach it really! when they scratch the sofas (and they WILL!) take them off and over to their scratching posts and get their paws and 'scratch' with them, taught 2 of my cats this way and they do not touch the sofas :D

if you get a short haired cat....they still 'shed'! my older cat is a siamese x Tabby and hairs are Everywhere & his short haired!

they do not 'poo' everywhere! cats are VERY CLEAN and do not like to p**p everywhere in their homes!

when you buy one, cats like dogs are 'programmed' to p**p not in their homes your kitten should come litter trained anyway! just show her where it is, put her in it & dig with her little paws...she will do the rest! it always surprises me you put a kitten in a litter tray & it just knows!

and you will never need to show her again so put it where you want it to stay!

and my older cat goes out so he poops outside! no need for a litter tray! if they do go out make sure they are mirco-chipped and have a collar that can break easily if they become caught on a tree...not nice to see!

can you afford insurance? food? looking after the kitten? will it be left alone for long periods? buy some cat books and show your dad that you dont just want a kitten cos its 'cute' but that you will be reasonable for its health, injections spaying/neutering costs food Etc

the cat is female get her spayed ASAP! at the vets, your dad will not want to be woken up at 3/4/5/6am for two weeks with her 'calling' some female cats SPRAY as well!!

    spaying early will stop this!

    good luck! :D
