Table Tennis Profile— Biba Golic the Table Tennis Goddess
Biba Golic, Serbian table tennis player, known for her beautiful looks, started playing the sport at the age of 9. She became the member of Serbian National Cadet Team when she was 12. She was the National Collegiate Champion in mixed doubles, singles and double events.
She has secured many table tennis titles including Portland Open Championship, California Open Championship Ohio Open Championship and US National Collegiate.
Twice, she was the Yugoslavian Champion at the team’s event and also won the singles event once.
She received an invitation to play Germany’s Bundesliga but could not continue the sport for very long as she left for the US to study in 2003.
While commenting on her journey so far, Golic mentioned that she was playing in Germany before moving to Texas.
She heard from her friends about the Texas Wesleyan University that gives scholarships to table tennis players. Biba then tried her luck and was accepted by the university, along side found Killer Spin as her sponsor.
Golic commented about her childhood as she mentioned that her dad used to bring table tennis balls and bats at home. She explained during an interview, that in Serbia one needs to go to the club to play the game.
Biba stated that sport of table tennis is not taken seriously in the United States even though there is great potential for it.
She was the number 2 ranked NCAA women’s player at the Illinois Institute of Technology and was also declared as the team’s most valuable player.
She has made quite a few appearances at the television and films. Her appearance at the table tennis related movie ‘Balls of Fury’ earned her a lot of success as the film completed a business of $32,844,290.
Other notable television and film appearances of hers include Welcome to the parker, Ping Pong Playa, Mike and Mike in the morning and the best d**n sports show period.
She was voted as the ESPN Sexiest Women in Sports and was ranked at the third position. Golfer, Netalie Gulbis and swimmer, Natalie Coughlin, were at the first and second positions respectively.
On winning the third position Golic said, "I couldn't believe that people would make a list and that more people would actually go on and vote for somebody that they think is the hottest. I was so surprised that people have that kind of interest".
She is also known as "the Anna Kournikova of table tennis." Biba won the Sexiest Athlete award by Spike Guys Choice in 2007.
The 33 year old was again nominated as one of the sexiest athletes at the Spike TV ‘guys choice’ in 2009.
During the show, Golic mentioned that she helped in promoting the sports to the United States. She said, “Table Tennis is growing in popularity in the United States, believe it or not. Most of the people play table tennis in their basements”.
Biba is a right handed all-round player and there is no doubt about her table tennis skills. The only difference between her and many other players is that she happens to be prettier than the rest.
It is true that the height of fame Golic has reached is only a dream for many other players with even better understanding of the sport.
