Table Tennis at the All-Africa Games 2011 – Table Tennis Update
This year’s All Africa Games is organised at Maputo, Mozambique as it started on September 3 and the competition will extend up to two weeks before finally concluding on the September 18.
This will be the 10th edition of the games and players from 48 nations are expected to participate in the event. There will be a total of 23 different sports played during the event and table tennis will be held from September 5-15.
Estadio do Zimpeto is the main stadium for the games as it was inaugurated on April 23, 2011 and has a capacity of 42,000 spectators. The stadium is mainly built for football with funds from the Chinese government but during the All-African Games it will
be used for most of the games.
Tunisia showed a much better performance than Mauritius at the table tennis event which was organised on the pattern of the World Championships with five single matches to be played by the team having three players in the squad.
The top eight countries have started their campaigns as they managed to make their way through. Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Congo Brazzaville, South Africa, Tunisia, Congo Democratic and Cameroon celebrated their wins as they managed to secure victory for all
the games during the table tennis event at the All Africa Games.
Brian Chan Yook managed to win the first two sets against Gdara Hmam of Tunisia but gave up the game as he the lost the next three sets and Gdara won the game by 3-2 with the following scores: 11-13, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 and 11-8. Rhikesh Taucoory helped Mauritius
secure a win when he defeated Hechemi Abid in a game that also stretched to the final set as scores were: 9-11, 13-11, 11-13, 11-9 and 11-7.
Mauritius had to face defeat earlier in the day but their win over Sudan helped to balance the day at the All Africa Games 2011. Egypt and Nigeria continued their dominance in table tennis as the two nations have always been the best at the events and are
favourites to show impressive performance at the tournament this year. It will be interesting to see if any other nation challenges Nigeria and Egypt during the table tennis event at the All Africa Games 2011.
