Table Tennis coaching course held in Maryland
The former National Junior table Tennis coach and the former editor of the United States Table Tennis magazine, Larry Hodges, conducted a course at Maryland Table Tennis Center in Gaithersburg, USA. The course was conducted in two sessions in four days over
two weekends. Playing time of six hours was allocated on each day in the last week of April.
The director of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hope Developmental Programme Glenn Tepper visited the United States of America (USA) in 2010. During his visit he conducted ITTF/PTT Level One and ITTF/PTT Level One Conductor Training courses.
The courses were held in order to introduce ITTF Coach Accreditation system in the USA.
The course conducted at the Maryland Table Tennis Center was self funded. It was the first such course to be held in the country under the banner of ITTF Development Programme and Larry Hodges is the first coach to conduct a training session
in the USA. The course was attended by 14 coaches from with in the country.
Larry conducted the course step by step. He used the technique of ‘learning by doing’. He gave lectures and also conducted training on the tables. He used references from the certification program created by the ITTF and the United States of America Table
Tennis (USATT).
Jef Savage, one of the participants said, “Each Coach had to prepare and present a five to ten minute demonstration to fellow coaches, on a subject selected by lot, the next step for the coaches is to achieve five hours supervised coaching by an ITTF certified
or other approved high level coach.”
The coaching course will help in the development of table tennis from the grass roots level in the US. The coaches were given ITTF Level One Certificates on the successful completion of 25 hours unsupervised training along with the coaching hours held under
the supervision of Larry. The coaches will be registered as Level One table tennis coaches with the ITTF and USATT.

Liu.
