Always keep one hand on your goalkeeper, dont chase up the table trying to score all the time. If you have a good defence (hand on goalkeeper at all times) you are in a strong position....

Make sure the paper is folded into a really tight triangle and give it a good flick.

What Rolsy says plus lubricate the rods where they go into the table with the inside of a crisp packet (I've even seen people with a can of 3 in 1 oil for this purpose). Don't spin the rods, its foul play and you have no control. Try and pass the ball up the table rather than taking pot shots.
