Question:

Table of Content in Word 2003 Header 1 Problems?

I have a table of Contents, with both Header 1 and Header 2, 3 & 4 in the body of the text.

Header 2, 3 & 4 are fine and align with the page numbers to the right.

Header 1 Page Numbers Do not align to the right on the table of Contents.

What am I doing wrong?

Please understand this is the first time I have ever used TOC, Headers etc in formatting so I am no expert.

  1. Sounds like either you've changed the formatting in some way for only the heading 1 style or it's a glitch.

If I understand the problem correctly, reapplying the formatting to all your headings (I know, I know!  It can be tedius!!  At least the level 1 headings need doing and the rest can probably be ignored) and then putting in a new TOC may solve the problem.  Putting in a new TOC should cause it to ask if you want to replace the current one.

If you are able to put a screen shot somewhere, maybe you could do that.  It's got me intrigued, this one.  I know a fair bit about Word and I can't say I have any definite ideas on this one and I am still researching....

  2. The Table of Contents has its own styles for each Heading level.  These are the TOC 1, TOC 2, etc. styles.  You can get to them this way (in Word 2002 at least):

    1. Click the Insert->Reference->Index and Tables menu item.

    2. Click the Modify button.

    3. In the next dialog box, with the TOC 1 style highlighted, click the next Modify button.

Here I can't give you much more direct help other than to suggest you look for differences in formatting between the TOC 1 and the other TOC n styles.  In particular, I suspect the right-justification is accomplished with a Right-Justify tab.  I'd check to see if the TOC 1 style has that type tab or not.  Look at this with the Format button, Tabs selection.

    Hope that helps.
