  1. Sea salt is generally used for its flavor and texture, "table salt" is often fortified with iodine, which is a trace element addition for health and nutrition.

Many sources of salt are used in different parts of the world. In Arizona, near Phoenix, Morton utilizes heavily salinated deep watertables to supply the salt water which is pumped to the surface and evaporated in ponds to supply salt for a variety of uses.

In much of the world, sea salt IS the primary source of table salt.

Sea salt does contain many trace elements that have little or no effect health wise, but many swear by it's distinctive flavor.

Salt is something we all need, although most of us get far too much in our diets today, but there is really no evidence that any one source of that edible salt is of any noticable difference from any other, health wise, no matter what marketing departments might claim.

  2. Common table salt is almost pure sodium chloride, often with the addition of an iodine compound.  Sea salt contains many other trace minerals, and is sometimes also iodized.  The body does need quite a few minerals in very small amounts, and sea salt is a very convenient way to supply them.
