Tach on the Johnson?

Ok so I use a static tach on the fly wheel. (johnson 9.5 hp) I feel like a dumbass but how does this work!!!. Do I test with the boat on the lake or do a barrel test? With the cover on or off?? I am handy with the tools and such when it comes to mechanical stuff but sometime I run across something I have never done before and I feel like a total rookie!! Thanks in advance!

  1. exactly what procedure are you wanting to perform?

ah, missed seeing your earlier question.

Not sure what "static tach" is, but check out this cheap digital induction tach:  http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/gasolin...

know some people who have 'em, they like 'em

"expecting too much"?  You're doing exactly what you should be doint -- getting the most out of your motor.  Once you're sure it's making all the power it can make, then you'll know what to expect.  :D

  2. Your going to need to do this on open water at WOT. The induction tack is the bomb. best tool ever made for little outboards. In the shop we had a "test wheel" and large tank. The test wheel came from the factory and was calibrated to give your particular motor a load that the motor could turn up to max recommended RPM. If the motor couldn't do it, there was a problem. So know the top RPM and put you tac on and try the recommended prop on the boat. See what it will do. If you are going slow and can't wind above the top RPM-the motor has a problem. There were not many props for that motor. A prop shop can modify yours for a fee- but if it gets close-the extra expense will not produce a magic. Is this the old low profile 9.5 from the early 60's? They were a neat motor but a bugger to work on. You needed a special clamp to hold on to the motor to work on it -as the transom clamps went with the side castings when you tried to get to stuff.
