Tackling the serves of Serena Williams is the toughest task says Samantha Stosur – Tennis News
World number seven, Samantha Stosur, bowed out to the top ranked Belarusian superstar, Victoria Azarenka, in the quarter-final of the US Open Championship and failed to defend her title. However, she believes that the former world
number one, Serena Williams, is the favourite at the hard courts of Flushing Meadows and the remaining contestants should find a way to tackle her fast and accurate serves that posts the biggest threat.
The third seed Russian superstar, Maria Sharapova, completely concurs to the comment of the former US Open Champion and stated about Williams, “She finds the corners extremely well, but on a consistent level. Its one thing to serve
a big serve, but it's another thing to do it consistently match in, match out. It is that first shot. So if you're feeling confident and if you feel like that's a shot that's working for you, I think all other pieces of the puzzle kind of come together."
At the moment, player under the cosh is the 10th ranked Italian superstar, Sara Errani, who will be locking horns with Williams in a final showdown spot hunt. Technically, she holds no chance at all against the experienced
and in-form American but anything can happen at the courts. However, the two superior seeded superstars have spoken about the American fourth seed and she needs to focus on the serving aspect of her rival.
Williams is virtually unbeatable at the moment. She darted 102 aces in her Wimbledon Championships conquest at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, earlier in June. It is a record for most number of aces by any woman in the year’s
third Grand Slam Championship. Moreover, she continued to impress with a successful conquest at Stanford and followed it up with a stunning performance at the London Olympics; grabbing the gold medal after blasting through the Russian blonde, Sharapova, in
the final.
Reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, will be facing the 25-year-old Russian in the other semi-final. So, there is a possibility of Sharapova meeting the likes of Williams in the grand finale of the US Open Championship
on the eve of Saturday at Arthur Stadium, New York.
The message from the last year’s US Open is clear that the opponent’s need to devise a plan to tackle the big fiery serve of Williams. Errani might be a bit short heighted and less experienced; failing to handle the pressure but
Sharapova has the ability to defy the odds and make things interesting.
