The key to using the DRS, experience is beginning to show us, is the tactical decision of when to use the limited number of available reviews. Both Ricky Ponting’s Australia and Andrew Strauss’ England were both left short of challenges at some stage during their recent Test matches, but the captains are now cottoning on to how to use the system.

For example, experience has shown that caught behind decisions – even with all the available technology such as snicko and hotspot, can be some of the hardest for a fielding side to have reversed in their favour. However, the ball tracking technology makes lbw appeals one of the easiest for the third umpire to assess.
