Question:

Tae Kwon Doe Question?

I hated Tae Kwon Doe, but at my last lesson, it was my best lesson yet (4th lesson) and there were only 6 kids there, normally there are 14.

Anyways, when the lesson was over, Grand Master put a white stripe on my white belt. What does this mean? And how do I advance to another belt? Will they do competition, or just see that I'm ready and advance me?

  1. when i was testing for color belts what it meant in my school is that you understand the basics of what you need to know. I'm not talking about basics as in front kick, side kick, etc. I'm talking about beginning to grasp the general understanding of things.  in my school, once you got to you black stripe then you were able to test for your next rank up but only if the instructor thought you were ready for testing. i entered my first competition when i was a blue belt and it was the best thing that i ever did, not only did i gain the respect of my instructor but i also gained the respect of the master of the school. nothing beats that feeling.

  2. Getting tips is a good thing.

At our school, for kids it's like this:

Blue Tip: punching defense & self defense

    Green Tip: form

Yellow Tip: Basic Kicks, Punches and Balance

    White Tip: Blocking Set/Stances

Red Tip: Excellent Attendance, Attitude, Terminology, Oral Questions

You have to earn all 5 tips before you can test for the next belt.

Then it starts over, as each belt has different requirements in those same aspects.

  3. This means you have passed a level in whit belt training. Depending on your school you will advance to another color stripe in a certain number of classes more or attain a certain level of skill. It is a way of marking progress. When your instructor sees how you are doing he will advance you. The first few lessons are always the most difficult . I remember my first few weeks of feeling awkward and stupid. As you learn more you will become more comfortable and start to enjoy the classes more. Hang Tough..... A black belt is a white belt that did not give up! :)

  4. When I studied Tae Kwon Do a stripe meant a promotion. Our system was White, White with Yellow Stripe, Yellow, Yellow with Green Stripe, Green, and so on.

I know everyone teaches differently with different systems but keep going and don't stop. If you are not happy with TKD then find another discipline to study. Some good to come from everything.

  5. Iv been in tae kwon do since January of this year and I'm a orange belt but i have no idea what the white strip is. maybe you should ask your instructor. when it comes to leveling belts well our tkd school( big,our little branch is just part of the whole school) does a test in our main dojang every like 2 months and i don't know about your school but most schools do it that way. maybe they even do it at your dojang you do class in. i hope that helped.

  6. I take kumi-uchi jiujitsu and we get stripes on our belts to determine when we can go for our next test. I'm a purple belt going for a brown so for me, it takes two months to get one stripe. Once I get three stripes, I'm eligible to go for my brown belt. It's different for all styles, but that's how my school works.

The stripes are usually colored tape. The stripe is usually the color of the belt you're going for. So my stripes are brown.

    Hope that helps :-)

  7. A stripe after only four lessons? That seems a little soon, but I don't know what your belt system is like. I've heard that some schools put maybe a stripe or two on your belt before you are allowed to test for your yellow. It's just a way to show that you've made progress and you're closer to your next belt, but not quite there yet.

In my school we have black stripes on the belts instead, but some people may go straight from White to Yellow. Depends on the person and how well they do on their test.

As always, if you want to progress, remember to practice!

  8. I used to take TKD when I grew up (mid '80s) and all I know is that there was a belt test about once a month or so.  In order for you to go on to the next belt, you had to do the forms (taeguk?) and maybe some board-breaking.  They didn't issue stripes of any sort or electrical tapes on the belts, but I think your master is trying to sucker your parents out of more cash with the stripe thing.  These are the belt colors that we had (in order):

white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, red, junior black (black and red) then black (1st dan thru 8th dan).  All of the other colors are ways for the master to milk unsuspecting students...

  9. I hated my first day ! I didn't know everyone or how to kick ! I don't know why he put a white stripe on you belt so i can't help you there . But to advance  to a belt is that you have to have a number a time that you've come in , then you have to test IN FRONT OF EVERONE thats there .

  10. WELL WHEN I TOOK TAE KWAN DOE IT MEANT I WAS PRETTY MUCH ELIGIBLE FOR MY BROWN BELT...IN OTHER WORDS READY FOR HIGHER SUCCESS

  11. I take BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and we Get promoted by defeating oponents, and makieng them TapOut.

  12. Your teacher is doing the right thing..he/she senses that you are not as interested/engaged in training and is doing his best to motivate you, any way possible.  Try to stay focus and motivated and be open to whatever rewards you get from him.  He's only looking out for your best interest
