white

yellow

My school had white belt, 3 steps in yellow, 3 steps in Green, 3 steps in Red belt, then 1st Degree Black.

This was a school that taught for very little money out of the students.  If I wanted to make money on my students I would throw in an orange, purple , Blue, Brown and any other color I might think of. Then I would charge extra for promoting to each belt color.

All schools are different, but most have around 6 belts

White

Blue

Brown (Red)

Black

Some schools use slashes or color bands on the belts so that training is prolonged. But I have heard of some schools that have more then 15 belts before you reach your black belt (First Dan).

...no, not every school is different. By and large, there are only two options. 99% of actually accredited (and I use that term loosely, since we're talking about TKD here, lol) schools fall under the govern of either ITF or WTF. The two have different belt systems, but all ITF schools are the same as each other in that regard, and the same applies to WTF.

As the others said, every school is different. The belt order in my school is like this:

White

Yellow

Yellow Stripe

Green

Green Stripe

Blue

Blue Stripe

Brown

Red

Black

And you may or may not test for the stripe. At the most recent testing at our school, a green belt went straight to blue, but it had been awhile since she had tested last.

Oh, and I'm a proud blue belt. :)
