ok so in taekwando, I am a yellow belt. I am going to my orange belt test next week. They want me to do the following things:

One Step Sparring (know it)

Taeguk Il Jang (know it)

Break 2 boards, one with side kick and one with roundhouse

When I kick the board with side kick, what part of my foot should i kick with? They hold the board up really high, so if I try to kick high, I either loose my balance or I dont kick hard enough. For roundhouse, they hold it at a low level, but at the last test, this guy kicked the board and his toe nail fell off (OMFG GROSSSS) what part of my foot should i kick with for roundhouse breaking?

  1. For the side kick you kick with your heel. For the roundhouse you kick with the instep of your foot. I would think they would hold the roundhouse board higher than the side kick board.

  2. For a good side kick you kick with your heel and want to have your toes facing the down or to the side. Heel should be higher than your toes.

On a round kick you want to kick with your instep (top of foot) point your toes just like you do when you swim.

    Good Luck on your test.

  3. u wanna kick with your heel for the sidekick. how do you not know that? and if you can't reach that high i think you might wanna work on your flexibility. and roundhouse, you could also use your heel. that's how my sensei showed me

  4. i don't know where some of these people learned to kick. you cannot use your heel with a roundhouse, i believe the person who said that is confusing it with a hook kick. nor do you want to use the instep of your foot on a board. strictly speaking taekwondo style...[which is what they want to see by the way]. you want to pull your foot up, your toes back. you want to hit with the "ball" of your kicking foot. not your toes. a roundhouse is basically a sideways front kick. again pull your toes back just like in a front kick.

  5. for the side kick you use your heel. you should know that. and the roundhouse, use the sole of you foot. you should know that too. and if they hold the board too high can't you just ask for a little lower? and the only reason that guys toenail fell off is because he hit the board with his toes.
