  1. they learnt from their instructors the same way you are. and eventually get good enough to grade and then they just go back to their instructor to be graded.

  2. We can all learn bits and pieces from the internet and from books and magazines, but nothing substitutes for years of training and experience in a dojang.

Testing can vary from school to school, but it's typically a day long test in front of a panel of masters consisting of cardio/endurance, technical skills, oral questions regarding TKD history, knowledge of belt meanings and form meanings, performance of forms, self defense techniques, one and/or three step sparring techniques, live sparring and breaking techniques.

  3. Tae Kwon Do instructors started out learning just like everyone else. they attended classes, tested for higher rank, and eventually achieved a high enough rank where their organization recognized them as enough of an authority to evaluate and promote other students. You had someone else refer to the WTF way of managing this through the Kukkikwon. In the ITF, instructors must be certified through the IIC (International Instructor Commitee). Their technique and knowledge is evaluated, and they are certified to instruct, evaluate, and promote students up to certain ranks, depending on their OWN rank (for example, a 2nd Dan cannot give a 3rd Dan test).

Simply being an instructor does not mean you stop training yourself, although you will likely train LESS then you did before. However, testing requirements change as you advance in the Dan ranks; at one point your teaching credentials and abilities are evaluated along with your technical skills and knowledge to determine if you are able to advance (4th Dan I THINK, not there yet, will tell you when I get there or ask my instructor). but Tae Kwon Do instructors still receive instruction still get evaluated by their instructor the same as we do.

  4. It depends on if the school is ITF or WTF. WTF usually has someone from the kukiwon come down to test and observe. I don't know what ITF does. There is always someone more experienced than you, so it's not like there is a point where you don't have to learn anything any more.

  5. I trained for three years to attain the rank of 1st dan at a Taekwando school. The master instructor there had been trained at a school where the master there was certified by the founder of the International Taekwando Federation, General Choi. The school I trained at is certified by NAPMA, and MTA, and is a member of ITF.

After I reached 1st dan I trained for an additional year to become a certified instructor. In our system you must be tested for black belt ranks by someone at least a rank higher than you. You must be tested in person.

Schools vary and you need to be cautious about what they advertise. There is no legal regulating body for martial arts schools. They are run on the honor system and caveat em tore.

  6. they learn their techniques from other instructors, Duh
