I'm going to try and make a falafel recipe and the recipe says it needs tahini sauce. I don't have any! What can I use as a substitution in falafel?

  1. peanut butter

  2. Tahini cannot be substituted, it is very original and the taste will be very different if substituted. Peanut butter will taste weird. You could buy it. Its sesame seed paste ^.^

  3. peanut butter is not a good substitute. almond would be more like it, but still not the same as the sesame paste. I have tried peanut butter and it was inedible. I love peanuts and peanut butter too...

I am assuming the tahini is used as a condiment for the falafel, so what you could do if you don't have any tahini is make a creamy sauce to go with it instead. My husband doesn't like tahini so I make tzatziki sauce for his falafel. Mix together sour cream or yogurt with lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper. If I have it in the house I will peel and dice a cucumber for the sauce and also sometimes add some dill.

  4. I don't think there is really a substitution, but I have read that [natural] nut butters can be used, but I would recommend buying tahini. It would be at most grocery stores.
