Taiwanese tennis star, Chan Yung-Jan’s rankings rise
21 year old Taiwanese tennis pro, Chan Yung-Jan, saw a marked increase in her rankings on the Women’s Tennis Association charts.
This is despite the fact that she lost the mixed doubles title match at the 2011 Australian Open just one day prior to the release of the rankings.
Chan Yung-Jan teamed up with Australian tennis pro, Paul Hanley, to compete in the tournament, and lost the title match 3-6, 6-3, 7-10 to Slovenia’s Karatina Srebotnik and Canadian tennis pro, Daniel Nestor.
The WTA website now ranks Yung-Jan at World Number 112 on the singles charts, and World Number 15 in women’s doubles rankings. She is the most highly ranked Taiwanese tennis pro in the world at the moment. Although, she lost at Melbourne Park, the experience
seems to have been a vital learning experience for Chan.
Returning to her homeland on Monday, Chan entertained reporters at the airport and acknowledged that the familiarity she had gained by playing on a grand slam title court was very important for her confidence.
She said, “The final gave me lots of confidence and I’ve kept on making progress. Our rivals are great tennis players and I was under tremendous pressure yesterday and it was hard to predict their shots. But because the scores were so close in the third
set, I think I still have a chance to defeat them [in the future]”.
Chan Yung-Jan first excelled in 2006, when she reached the semi-finals of the Japan Open. Another significant career achievement for the Taiwanese player was her run at the 2007 PTT Bangkok Open. She managed to reach the finals of the event, where she lost
to Flavia Pennetta.
In 2007, Chan participated in the Australian Open only to lose her first round match to Alicia Molik in straight sets. While her singles play is nothing to write home about, she managed to reach the finals of the women’s doubles by teaming up with compatriot
Chuang Chia-jung. Chan and Chuang lost to Cara Black and Liezel Huber in three sets.
Chan made her debut in the World’s Top 50 players in 2007, after a first round loss to Elena Likhovtseva at Roland Garros.
