Taj Burrow advances to Round 4 of Hurley Pro – 2011 ASP World Tour
The seventh stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Hurley Pro, entered into a third consecutive day of action with the first heat of Round 3 on Tuesday, September 20, at Lower Trestles in California, America.
The heat saw Australia’s Taj Burrow prevail over his compatriot, Kai Otton, to clinch the Round 4 spot on offer, while adding his opponent’s name to the elimination list.
Despite getting-off to a shaky start on the opening day of Hurley Pro, Burrow was expected to bounce back strongly in the relegation Round 2, which he successfully did. Now, he was pitted against his countryman, Otton, in yet another sudden-death battle.
Otton himself was unable to get-off to an ideal start on first day of the competition, but managed to make a strong comeback during Round 2. He now needed to survive his Round 3 bout against Burrow to advance further in the competition. The battle was going
to be his toughest of the competition, because his rival was among the most dangerous surfers in the line-up.
As the battle commenced, Otton caught a wave in the opening minutes to score 6.67 points off it and soon, he added another 6.30 points to his account to reach a heat-total of 12.97 points.
Burrow went through a series of waves before locking one to pull-off a combination of exquisite tricks, as earned 8.60 points for the effort and set himself up for a win. Few minutes later, he caught another wave to score 6.90 points off it and moved to
a heat-total of 15.50 points. The 2.53-point lead over his rival eventually carried him off to a convenient win, securing his place in the fourth round.
The 32-year-old Burrow has earned himself quite a reputation over the years through his consistent performances, regardless of the location and condition of waves. His skills are undeniable and his potential is boundless. Even though he has not been able
to win a single ASP World Title to date, he always gives the ultimate winner of the title, a run for his money. The elite-tour veteran is once again among the strongest contenders for the World Title as he currently sits at Number Six on the ASP World Title
Rankings.
The Round 4 heat will put Burrow against Brazil’s Adriano de Souza and France’s Jeremy Flores in a three-man battle for the quarter-final spot.
