Taj Burrow and CJ Hobgood make the Round 4 cut at Oakley Pro Bali – Surfing news
Australia’s Taj Burrow and America’s CJ Hobgood walked away victorious from their respective Round 3 heats at the Oakley Pro Bali, stop no. 5 on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which recommenced at Keramas in
Bali, Indonesia, on Tuesday, June 25, 2013.
Burrow got the better of Brazil’s Miguel Pupo in the opening heat of Round 3 to earn his place in Round 4, while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The second heat saw Australia’s Adrian Buchan surrendering the Round 4 spot to Hobgood after failing to hold is on and thus found himself eliminated from the competition.
After staying on hold for four days due to low swell, the surfing action finally resumed at the main event site, allowing the huge crowd in attendance to witness the thrilling battles between the best in the business.
Burrow had not gotten off to an ideal start at the Oakley Pro Bali, but he had managed to make amends in Round 2 to extend his life in the event.
The seasoned elite tour campaigner found himself pitted against Pupo, an ASP World Tour rookie, in a man-on-man battle for the Round 4 spot.
As the heat got underway, Burrow got down to business right away and found an 8.50-point ride to claim an early advantage. He went on to add an additional 7.33 points to his account, thus getting to a heat-total of 15.83 points.
Pupo responded with an ordinary performance and only managed to get to a heat-total of 9.17 points, which included a 5.17 and 4.00-point ride. As a result, he found himself eliminated from the competition.
The next heat saw Hobgood take on Buchan in a battle for survival.
Both the surfers showed a great deal of determination during their hunt for a couple of good scores and continued to fight tooth-and-nail for victory until the end.
Once the dust settled, however, it was Hobgood who stood victorious with a heat-total of 12.10 points, comprising of a 6.93 and 5.17-point ride, against his rival’s two-wave total of 11.67 points, which included a 6.67 and 5.00-point ride.
As a result, the American surfer went through into the next round, while the Australian surfer exited the field.
