Taj Burrow and Jay Quinn put on stunning performances to prevail in Round 3 of Burton Toyota Pro
Australia’s Taj Burrow and New Zealand’s Jay Quinn continued their excellent run of form in Round 3 (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Burton Toyota Pro to collect comprehensive victories in their respective heats that went down
at Merewether Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Thursday, March 15.
The outstanding performances by Burrow and Quinn in the first and second heat of Round 3 respectively served to carry them through into Round 4 (Round of 24) of the event. Brazil’s Filipe Toledo and Krystian Kymerson also kept themselves alive in the event
by clinching runner-up place in their respective heats.
The surfing conditions on day 4 of the competitions were not exactly ideal, but still provided plenty of opportunities to the surfers to unleash a huge array of technical manoeuvres during their hunt for a big score.
The 33-year-old Burrow, currently No.1 on the 2012 ASP World Title series, took on an in-form Toledo, his compatriot Jesse Mendes and America’s Michael Dunphy in the opening heat of Round 3.
The Australian surfer displayed his class during the course of the heat. Using his local knowledge of the waves and experience, Burrow attacked wave after wave to hunt for a good score. He eventually managed to post an impressive 7.63 on the score-board
off his first business-wave and immediately followed it up with an even better 7.87-point wave for a heat-total of 15.50 points.
Toledo collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a heat-total of 12.70 points. The score proved enough to put him in runner-up place, taking him through into the next round.
Mendes and Dunphy were unable to extend their life in the event after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 12.33 and 11.67 points respectively.
The second heat featured a mesmerising performance by Quinn as he completely stole the show with an exhibition of genuine skills and style. The Kiwi locked his first business-wave early in the heat to post an intimidating 9.07 on the score-board. After a
long and determined hunt, he backed it up with an 8.50-point wave to finish with a decisive heat-total of 17.57 points.
A heat-total of 12.47 points put Kymerson in second position, consequently adding him to the Round 4 line-up.
South Africa’s Shaun Joubert and Brazil’s Alan Donato got their names added to the elimination list after finishing in third and fourth place with a heat-total of 9.83 and 8.84 points respectively.
