Taj Burrow and Joel Parkinson make the quarter-finals at O’Neill Coldwater Classic
Australia’s Taj Burrow and his fellow countryperson Joel Parkinson made the quarter-finals at the O’Neill Coldwater Classic, the ninth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after emerging triumphant
in their respective Round 4 heats that went down at Santa Cruz in California, America, on Monday, November 5, 2012.
Burrow got the better of Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and South Africa’s Travis Logie in the first heat to advance to the quarter-finals, relegating both his rivals to the fifth round to surf again for a spot among the quarter-finalists.
The second heat saw Parkinson make his way through into the quarter-finals after claiming victory over Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro and Alejo Muniz, consequently forcing them to take a trip to Round 5.
With demanding conditions gracing the primary event site of Steamer Lane on the latest day of the competition, the contests between the elite ASP surfers continued to remain thrilling, as all of them had to dig deep in the bag of tricks to come up with tricks
that could be executed in such demanding conditions.
The first heat of Round 1 saw Burrow taking on Medina and Logie in a three-man battle for the quarter-final spot.
As the battle got underway, the Australian surfer proved himself to be in a league of his own, looking extremely stylish as he collected an 8.00 and 7.47-point ride to register a winning heat-total of 15.47 points.
Medina finished behind him in second place with a heat-total of 15.13 points, which comprised of a couple of scores in the seven-point range, whereas Logie collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to register a two-wave total of 12.67 points.
The second heat saw Parkinson claim a convincing victory over Monteiro and Muniz, advancing comfortably to the quarter-final as a result.
The Australian surfer stole the show right away with a near-perfect 9.50-point ride and soon went on to back it up with a 5.27-point ride, thus finishing the heat with a decisive heat-total of 14.77 points.
Monteiro earned a 7.00 and 4.93 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.93 points, whereas Muniz register a heat-total of 7.37 points, which comprised of a 3.00 and 4.37-point ride. Both the surfers were consequently relegated to the fifth round.
