Taj Burrow clinches win in Round 1 heat of Hurley Pro – 2011 ASP World Tour
Australia’s Taj Burrow captured a win in the third heat of Hurley Pro’s Round 1 that went down at the Lower Trestles in California, America, on Sunday, September 18.
The 33-year-old Australian prevailed over his compatriots, Adam Melling and Chris Davidson, to move directly into Round 3. Melling and Davidson were relegated to the second round after finishing in second and third place respectively.
Burrow is renowned for his ability to perform under any conditions at any surfing location in the world. Therefore, nothing but an exceptional performance was expected of him during the latest stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World
Tour at Lower Trestles.
With high-performance two-to-three foot waves on offer at the primary event site, the third of Round 1 got underway. Burrow got off to an impressive start, catching a wave in the opening minutes to open his account with 6.33 points. After going through a
series of mediocre waves, he locked a good wave to pull off a series of exciting manoeuvres, earning 7.33 points for the effort and moving to a heat-total of 13.66 points. The score kept him ahead of his rivals on the scoreboard through the course of the heat
and eventually allowed him to walk away with top honours, consequently securing his place in the third round.
Melling was forced to settle for second place despite looking quite threatening throughout the 30-minute battle for the Round 3 spot. He got off to a decent start, earning 6.13 points off his very first wave, and followed it up with a 6.23-point wave to
reach a heat-total of 12.36 points. He was unable to improve on his score as the heat progressed, which eventually forced him to concede victory to Burrow.
Davidson remained the least-impressive performer during the three-man battle. He opened his account with a 5.00-point wave and soon collected another 4.80 points off his second business-wave to finish with a heat-total of 9.80 points. The disappointing effort
resulted in his third-place finish.
Melling and Davidson will now compete in the relegation Round 2, the result of which will decide whether they remain in contention for the event-title or not.
