Taj Burrow downs Adrian Buchan to enter Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Semi-finals – Surfing News
Australia’s Taj Burrow got the better of his fellow countryman Adrian Buchan in the fourth Quarter-final of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast that went down at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia, on Sunday, March 4.
Advancing through into the Semi-final after his excellent come-from-behind victory in the last of the four Quarter-finals, the 33-year-old Burrow would go head-to-head with South Africa’s in-form Jordy Smith for the coveted spot in the Final.
Burrow had not gotten off to the best of starts at the first event of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, getting pushed to the edge after a disappointment in the first round. However, he came back strongly and continued to build
momentum as the event progressed, downing competitor after competitor to steadily make his way forward.
Facing Burrow in the fourth Quarter-final was Buchan. The 29-year-old Australian surfer was in a pretty formidable form and had managed to make a number of top surfers from around the globe succumb to his skills and experience during the initial rounds.
The conditions were pretty demanding, but he had done exceptionally well to adjust to them and put on a series of performances that were nothing short of spectacular.
As the battle for the last remaining Semi-final slot got underway in two-to-three foot waves, Burrow got off to a promising start. He locked his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post a 7.93 on the score-board.
Buchan rose to the challenge and immediately responded with an 8.07-point score, getting past his rival to take an early lead. As the heat progressed, he caught another juicy wave to add an additional 7.90 points to his account, putting his rival under immense
pressure.
Rather than panicking under pressure, Burrow kept his cool and continued to search for a decent opportunity to score big. He found his chance in the dying minutes of the heats. He caught his second business-wave to unleash a string of exquisite tricks, earning
an 8.93 for the effort to finish with a heat-total of 16.86 points, consequently walking away with the win.
With the conclusion of the Quarter-finals, Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover continued with the Semi-final battles at Snapper Rocks on Sunday.
