Taj Burrow downs Willian Cardoso to rebound in Round 2 of Volcom Fiji Pro
Australia’s Taj Burrow got the better of Brazil’s Willian Cardoso in the second heat of Volcom Fiji Pro’s Round 2 that went down at the primary event site of Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji, on Monday, June 4.
With his success in Round 2, Burrow advanced through into the third round of the latest stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Series, bringing the competition to a premature end for Cardoso in the process.
The second day of the competition saw four-to-six foot waves gracing the primary event site, promising to deliver a heavy dose of enthralling battles throughout the course of the day. With the elite surfing talent standing on the edge following their Round
1 disappointment, their Round 2 battles were expected to be nothing short of epic. The waves presented a perfect opportunity for the surfers to put their exquisite skills on display and consequently improve their chances of ensuring their survival in the contention
for the event title. The crowd anticipated the showdowns to be intense and pretty intense, as the determination of the surfers was bound to become apparent.
Burrow had kicked-off the latest season of the elite tour with a win at Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, but failed to keep the momentum going. Things had not gone too well for him on the opening day of the competition as he got relegated to the second round.
He now faced the Brazilian powerhouse Cardoso in Round 2, with the pressure of elimination hanging over his head.
As the battle got underway, the 34-year-old Burrow got off to a solid start, getting hold of a potent scoring opportunity to post a 6.83 on the score-board. Going through a series of ordinary wave-scores, he eventually added another 5.83 points to his account,
thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.66 points.
Cardoso struggled with his rhythm throughout the course of the battle. He only managed to score a 4.10 off his first business-wave and immediately backed it up with a 3.97-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 8.07 points. The 4.59-point deficit caused
him to surrender victory and thus the Round 3 spot to Burrow.
