Taj Burrow surges into the Quarter-Finals at Quiksilver Pro France – 2011 ASP World Tour
Quiksilver Pro France continued to treat the crowd to a heavy dose of thrilling action during Round 4, with the fourth heat pitting Australia’s Taj Burrow against his compatriot Owen Wright and America’s Damien Hobgood in a battle for the coveted Quarter-Final
spot on Tuesday, October 11, at the iconic beach-break of La Graviere in France.
The contest turned out to be pretty one-sided, with Burrow completely stealing the show with his outstanding performance to seal the fate of the heat in his favour and advancing through into the Quarter-Finals. Hobgood and Wright rounded out the second and
third positions respectively, consequently getting relegated to Round 5.
Burrow is renowned for his ability to perform well under any conditions at any surfing point around the globe. Despite the shifting five-foot waves gracing the primary event site, Burrow had done extremely well to follow one outstanding performance with
another, consequently moving smoothly into the fourth round to compete for the Quarter-Final spot.
Squaring off with Burrow in the fourth heat of Round 4 was the 21-year-old sensational, Wright. The young Australian was emerging as one of the biggest threat over the last few weeks, getting into the Finals at the previous stops of the ASP World Tour. He
had continued to look intimidating at the latest elite tour event and comfortably made his way into Round 4 without a scratch to face Burrow and Hobgood, another in-form surfer, in a battle for a place in the Quarter-Final.
As the fourth heat got under-way, Wright got off to a slow start and only managed to score 4.17 points off his first business wave. He soon added another 6.93 points to his account and moved to a heat-total of 11.10 points.
The 33-year-old Burrow remained patient during the early stages of the 30-minute battle, but eventually made his charge upon reaching the half-way stage. He locked his first business-wave to unleash a string of exquisite manoeuvres, earning 8.43 points for
the effort. Following it up with an even more impressive combination of tricks, the Australian added an additional 9.00 points to his account, climbing to an outstanding heat-total of 17.43 points. It seemed unlikely that any of his competitors would be able
to beat his score.
The third contender for the Quarter-Final spot, Hobgood, remained pretty unthreatening for most part of the three-man battle, but eventually made a charge in the final minutes, though to no avail. He collected a 7.83 off his first business-wave and soon
followed it up with a 6.30-point wave, consequently finishing in runner-up place with a heat-total of 14.13 points.
Burrow’s heat-total remained unbreakable throughout the entirety of the 30-minute battle and resulted in his progress into the Quarter-Finals.
