Taj Burrow defeats Adam Melling in Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The sixth stop of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro New York, continued to treat the fans to a heavy dose of thrilling action with the first heat of Round 3 that went down at the Long Beach in New York, on Wednesday, September
7.
The heat saw Australia’s Taj Burrow come up with an outstanding performance to prevail over his compatriot, Adam Melling, consequently advancing to the fourth round while eliminating his rival from the competition in the process.
Coming to New York after a really disappointing Tahiti experience, the 32-year-old Burrow was determined to redeem himself and hold on to his place in the top 5 on the ASP World Title Rankings by getting a good result at Long Beach. Getting off to a perfect
start at the latest event, he looked to be as threatening as ever.
On the other hand, 26-year-old Melling’s start to Quiksilver Pro New York had not been an ideal one and he had to pass through the relegation Round 2 to earn his place in the third round. However, his Round 2 performance had been really impressive and it
seemed that he was quite prepared to take on a formidable Burrow in the third round.
As the opening heat of Round 3 got underway, Melling got off to a decent start, locking a wave to score 6.17 points off it. However, Burrow pulled out aerial tricks from his arsenal, throwing a big alley-oops on his first business-wave to score 9.17 points
off it and move ahead of his rival on the scoreboard.
Melling soon added another 6.70 points to his account, moving to a two-wave total of 12.87 points. With a modest score required for victory, Burrow locked his second wave to collect 7.93 points off it and comfortably sealed the fate of the contest in his
favour, defeating his opponent by a margin of 4.23 points.
Commenting on the heat afterwards, Burrow said, "It's pretty good out there. US natural footers that like to do airs rub our hands together when wind's like that. I did that big alley-oop on that first wave and I stacked it, but when I was through air I
felt the board sticking to my feet. I knew that heat was going to be fun. I wasn't aware of his [Adam Melling's] position on the rankings, but I'm thinking about the money. I'm trying not to, but it's there in the back of my head.”
Losing to the 32-year-old Australian not only removed Melling from the competition, it also added him to the list of surfers who won't be able to make the mid-year rotation for Trestles due to him currently sitting at No.35 on the ASP World Ranking.
