Take Charge Indy off to Churchill early than others
Take Charge Indy showed in the Grade 1, $1 million that he has a tremendous amount of raw talent, and with the three time Kentucky Derby winner jockey Calvin Borel at the helm, chances are that the 3-year-old dark brown colt will post another victory over
the winners in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby.
Trainer Patrick Byrne never showed any regret of scrapping the Tampa Bay Derby, and insisted that he knows his horse best and he runs best when he is fresh, and Take Charge Indy proved his trainer right, and on the same philosophy Patrick Byrne is second
Take Charge Indy to Churchill Downs early than any other Kentucky Derby entrant.
“We’ll ship to Kentucky in 10 days,” Byrne said April 1. “We’re going to Churchill Downs and back off for a couple of weeks and freshen him up. We’ll give him a couple of half mile runs.”
Calvin Borel, who guided Take Charge Indy to a magnificent Florida Derby gate to wire win after sent at 7 to 1, will have the return ride in the Kentucky Derby.
“He’s always shown a lot of talent. He has a tremendous amount of raw talent," Byrne said. "He’s been on the immature side, and I’ve always said that the more time he gets, the bigger and stronger he’ll be. It’s been a normal progression and development.”
The Kentucky bred son of A.P. Indy, out of mare Take Charge Lady by Dehere, Take Charge Indy broke his maiden at first asking at Arlington Park, and then posted a runner up effort in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity over the same venue.
He finished fourth in the Grade 1Breeders’ Futurity, and without any improvement capped off his juvenile season with a 5th place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Take Charge Indy debuted his sophomore season with a second place finish in an allowance/optional claimer at Gulfstream Park, skipped the Tampa Bay Derby, stayed at home and won the Florida Derby, and recorded his first victory over the winners.
The colt showed how fast he is, as he downed a field which contained the likes of Union Rags and El Padrino in front running style fashion. That is doing something, and with his tactical speed, Take Charge Indy, is definitely the one to look out for in the
Kentucky Derby, especially if the track there plays well.
