Take Charge Indy turned in his first work after Florida Derby success
Chuck and Maribeth Sandford owned 3-year-old colt, Take Charge Indy, turned in his first work after posting an emphatic victory over the highly regarded Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes winner, Union Rags, at Gulfstream Park on 31 March, 2012.
Patrick Byrne trained 3-year-old colt is still at Palm Meadows, and he turned in his first work after almost three weeks of winning one of the most important prep race for the Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on 5 May, 2012.
The Kentucky bred son of A. P. Indy, turned in 5 easy furlongs in 1 minute and 1 2/5 seconds at Palm Meadows Training Centre on 19 April, 2012. He worked in company with the maiden from John Kimmel’s barn called, Transplendent, and under exercise jockey,
Eric Rodriguez, Take Charge Indy was clocked 24 seconds for the quarter mile and for the half mile 48 1/5 seconds.
Jockey Calvin Borel, who took the mount from J. Graham in 2012, has done well over the colt, and the pair with only two races together in their seasonal debut together finished second in an allowance/optional claimer at Gulfstream Park to another Derby contender,
El Padrino.
However, making it right big time, especially when trainer Patrick Byrne skipped the Tampa Bay Derby for the Florida Derby, it was a must win for Take Charge Indy for so many reasons.
“The horse is ready, the horse is fit,” said Byrne. “Eric said he was like a Cadillac. He’ll have one more work (at Palm Meadows) next week, but he won’t have any company. I’m going to do something next week just to do something.
“I’ve never been one to beat up on a horse. He’s fit, now it’s in the hands of the racing Gods. He’ll clip off 12’s like that all day. I told the rider not to do too much and he didn’t take a deep breath.”
Patrick Byrne is now hopeful that Take Charge Indy, out of mare Take Charge Lady by Dehere, will down the 1 ¼ mile Derby distance, keeping in view his pedigree and ability.
