Question:

Take a gap year?

Lately I have been thinking that instead of going straight to college I want to tak a year off. I was thinking of doing a 5 month volunteer program through Global Volunteer Network (anyone care to share their stories?) but I am not sure if it will be the best decision for me. I would leave in September and return in January, then probably move back with my parents, work and save up a little money, then start school again in September.

Again...not sure. Would love to hear some advice!

  1. Narr get to college all the people I know who did it regretted it as they were in college with younger people and when the likes of me got jobs we had the money flooding in unlike them who was still in school.

  2. I think it's a great idea, if you have the funds to do it. It's a life enriching experience. And it looks really good on a resume.

But no matter how fulfilling and exciting doing volunteer work in a foreign country can be, i think deep down you might still be a little envious of all the people of your age that are now in their freshman year of college. And then when you do go to college, they'll always be a year ahead of you and you'll always be with people who are younger than you. (That's what bothered me a little) Why not travel during summer breaks? And work--you're gonna have to work the rest of your life....think about it:)

  3. Gap years are good if you are doing something! Not working because then you really are wasting a year. its the opposite to what most people would say but because you are going to study after your gap year, halfway throught the year you will regret it, lots of working will be coming your way after you get your qualification. A gap year is not doing nothing for a year though because that is even more of a waste! I suggest going overseas and experiancing first hand other cultures and lifestyles. Heaps of people do it, the year goes by in a flash, its 1 big party and its something no work or study could ever give you!
