  1. i'm in the exact same boat... i'm gonna do kickboxing.

    cardio and muscle building.

but don't think you're safe just because you've taken it. don't put yourself in dangerous situations. i heard of a girl who walked around alone at night and thought she was invincable just because she took a class and ended up getting herself raped.

  2. hm, why not? it's good for you, it'll give you good excersize and make you stronger, i would. :D

  3. you should because its very good for you.avoid class like rape pervention.they dont fully prepair you to defend yourself in any given situation. they train you just to fight guys and only certain  situations. try to get a well rounded class and make sure the school is self defense based and not sport

  4. Regardless of what your situation is; school, work, home life, etc, you and everyone else should take some sort of self defense course.  I do not, however, recommend taking a one shot course.  I advise that you find a karate school that teaches self defense.  I own a karate school in AZ.  My advice for you, and anyone else considering learning self defense, is to go to several different schools.  Talk to the instructor and watch a couple of classes.  If you can, take the "introductory course" that any school(s) you decide you like, offers.  Any reputable school should offer a introductory class.  This class is basically a "test drive".  When the instructor starts teaching you kicks and punches and any type of "self defense technique" ask yourself if it would work when you are wearing street clothes.  By that I mean, how realistic is it?  Will it work if you are wearing tight jeans, a skirt, on gravel, on ice, up to your chest in water.  Remember, when you are at this "karate" school you will be wearing comfortable clothes that you can move around in.  Ask yourself, how practical is this kick or punch?  Does the instructor seem to know what he is talking about?  Also, anybody can open a karate school.  You could go out tomorrow, buy a black belt and put 3 stripes on it and call your self a 3rd degree black belt in Flying Monkey Karate and you would be correct.

  5. Ehhh.... it wouldn't really help actually, I'll assume by everyone's answers and your words that you're attempting to prevent rape? Well..... thing is, men fight differently when they're trying to rape someone..... they're attempting to humiliate, not win, so, with that in mind, many martial arts are very useless in that.... what would be better is to learn an escape focused art, no nonsense, and built to overpower, go with Krav Maga, it's a high intensity, high power martial art with techniques against knives, guns, multiple enemies, and everything, with that you can prevent a situation before it begins....it's a little intense though, so it's not for everyone, if you can take it though, it's one of the best.
