Takes sometimes up to 7 times to get TV turned on...

Question

Hi, when I try to turn the television on the picture does not come on the whole screen, usually off to one side and all wiggly and then it is like it is trying to get the picture properly and then the tv will just shut itself off. Then when you try to turn it on again it will either do the same thing with sometimes a little bit more of the picture coming properly and flattening out to look normal and then sometimes just the picture will go black with the power light will stay on. You have to do this sometimes up to 7 or eight times for the tv to have a proper picture and for it to stay on so that you can watch it. What could be wrong with my television and is this a costly repair or would I be better off to buy a new television?
