Taki Mrabet and Michelle Weber win gold medals: African Senior Championships - Recap
Taki Mrabet of TUNIS-ZZ and Michelle Weber of RSA-ZZ captured gold medals of Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) and Women’s 1500m freestyle respectively on seventh day of the 11th African Senior Swimming Championships 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya on
Sunday, September 16.
The session included playoffs of the 200m IM, 1500m freestyle, and 400m Medley Relay in Men and Women’s corner.
Mrabet served notice of his talent in the first playoff of the discipline. The 23-year-old Mrabet continued his gruelling form in the four-lap race and grabbed gold medal of the event by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 05.11 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Michael J Meyer of RSA-ZZ, who stayed 1.21 seconds apart and tapped the wall for silver medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 06.32 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Ayrton S Sweeney of RSA-ZZ, who was 0.42 seconds away from his foregoing swimmer and touched the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 06.74 seconds.
Fourth position of the event was secured by El Sayed Gadalla of EGY-ZZ, who was half a body length behind and ended his race in a time of 2 minutes and 07.22 seconds.
Afterwards, Weber served notice of her talent by capturing gold medal of the distant freestyle event. The 15-year-old Weber, who was inevitably strong for gold medal, smothered hopes of her opponents and pocketed the title with a timing of 16 minutes and
46.46 seconds.
The champion was followed by Kyna Pereira of RSA-ZZ, who stayed almost half a minute behind and stepped on the victory stand for silver medal by posting a time of 17 minutes and 14.24 seconds.
Third best spot of the event was secured by Reem Mohamed Hussein of EGY-ZZ, who remained nearly 14 seconds behind and submitted a time of 17 minutes and 28.34 seconds.
The third position holder was followed by Souad Cherouati of ALGE-ZZ, who stayed considerably slower from her former finisher and posted a time of 18 minutes and 01.47 seconds for fourth position.
Last event of the session was Men’s 400m Medley Relay, where team EGY-ZZ stifled hopes of their opponents and proved their mettle for the crown of the event. With their unrelenting efforts, the relay squad of EGY-ZZ remained two body lengths ahead of their
following team and secured the title by clocking a time of 3 minutes and 51.29 seconds.
Their effort remained 2.20 seconds ahead of TUNIS-ZZ, which occupied second position of the race with an effort of 3 minutes and 53.49 seconds.
Third spot of the event was obtained by relay team of RSA-ZZ that finished their race in a time of 3 minutes and 53.66 seconds.
Furthermore, Mrabet and Weber were contented with their unmatchable efforts and raked medal after the session.
