Taking Pictures of a Tornado?

Please don't call me dumb because I want a picture. I am trying to learn all I can about a tornado so I don't get hurt and I want to know how do you know a tornado is traveling in your direction. I know how to tell if the weather is right so don't say if it is windy or tornado warnings or hail.

  1. Just go to a library and ask the person on duty, to point you to the weather picture.

In case you do not make it to library, then the sound of approaching or passing tornado near by is quite different, it sounds like freight train.

Looking at the sky you can see a funnel shape cloud or massive dust cloud close to ground. But you must not venture to go out to see it best thing is to take shelter in correct place and stay there. The good thing about Tornado is that they get over in few minutes. They are not like typhoons or cyclone or even massive dust or wind stormers, that lingers on  and on for minutes or hours at a time.

Only recently (yesterday I believe) St. Louis MO, USA had 100 miles per hour wind gusts.

  2. Where is the fun in getting pictures of the internet?  If you want to tornado chase (take pictures), you go ahead, but always take a class first and learn about the safety.

Well, if you are close enough, you can see that a tornado is coming your way.  If you are not, you MUST have a computer or a DOW (Doppler On Wheels) to let you know about the storm and which way the storm is moving.  Tornadoes usually travel from the southwest to northeast and have an average speed of 30 mph.

You'll need a great, weatherproof car (to stand up to hail), but you will still face many damages.

I would recommend starting out with clouds (this is what I do right now).  I take pictures of ominous clouds.  It's fun and somewhat safe.  Then you can move up to tornado picture taking.

I would go to the camera section and ask about types of cameras for this sort of shooting.

Learn everything you can about tornadoes and clouds and it will be rewarding and fun! (And scary!)

Google around for classes that teach meteorology and tornado chasing in your area.

    Good luck!!!
