  1. Yes, kind of, but there are some moms who don't get along with the female puppies once they get a little older and actually can't live together.

Some of the rescues that I work with keep the puppies with their moms until they are about 12 weeks, and at that point they are done nursing and are kind of looking to go out on their own.  And now you are your puppy's new pack!

You are completely right that puppies and dogs in general want to be around other dogs as part of a pack and when they become part of a human family, they just substitute with the humans, other dogs and any other animals.  After we finished crate training our dog we allowed him to sleep in bed with us and once he was able to lay in the 'pack' with us and our cats he completely mellowed out - as if he was finally at peace in being part of the group.  Dogs aren't loners.  They like company.

And as for Tina F's comments about dogs not knowing each other, that is complete bs.  My brother has a dog who he got as a 12 week old puppy.  The entire litter were adopted out to people we know.  At about 2 years old my brother met up with one of the girls who had adopted one of the other boys.  From a block away they locked eyes, then could barely contain themselves to get to each other.  Immediately upon seeing each other they started l*****g each other and were completely sweet together.  When he saw one of his sisters a similar thing happened.

So, ignore Tina F and her rude comments, I think your question was interesting. Star for you!

  2. yeah, this happens alot at puppy mills. A major problem, one that happend eith my dog, is it was taken away before it learned social skills, so it thinks of everyone as an equal, and as such, bites and growls alot. It shouldnt be done, A its just wrong and B it can stunt their growth if they didnt get all the nutrients from their mother yet.

  3. YES Ive always felt bad for taking puppies away from  the mother or siblings but i see it as i always know that there going to go to a good home so it makes up for the sadness !

  4. no. they don't care. you won't either if you were 8 weeks old when leaving home and noone told you where you had been or if you were adopted or not.

  5. Yeah poor puppies, I feel for them too :(

  6. Dogs dont really have the same concept of "family" as you and I do.  They develop packs.. which is their family to them.

Actually alot of times if you try to keep all the moms and littermates, you end up with dogs who often will fight each other.  They really are better off to be separated and raised in a loving home with people.

  7. I too, feel bad fir them. I took my dog away from her mom, that is my aunts dog. So I like getting them together from time to time. ^-^

  8. Actually, as the puppies grow older, they start becoming more attached to their human masters than their litter mates.  The mothers wean their puppies for a reason, not because we take them away from their mom.  So to answer your question, no I don't feel bad about it because they love us more than their litter mates as they grow.

  9. its kinda sad. :[

  10. I almost didn't get my last pup because the lady who was taking his brother wanted him too but I already "reserved" him.I though that maybe he would be happier with his bro.

He's happy with my family and his new canine siblings.

  11. I do, thats why I try to get puppies either with a sibling, or buy a mommy and a couple pups

  12. Sometimes the breeders hold periodical reunions for them n.n
