  1. practice makes perfect

  2. You don't signal when backing up, just to slow down and turn, and your brake lights and turn signals should take care of that.

Backing up:  just realize that you can't see very well backing up, so be looking all around!  It is a BIG temptation to back up without looking when you get good, that is stupid and will cost you an expensive accident, and maybe someone else getting hit.

Parking:  You need to move slow, but turn the steering wheel fast.  I was taught:

Pull up even alongside the car in front of the parking place, so you can back into the space.  Make sure there is no one behind you, of course.  And keep an eye on the car behind the space--don't concentrate on the front so much you ram the car in the rear!

Back SLOWLY, turning the wheel fast to the RIGHT to back into the space.

    Watch the car behind.

When your steering wheel is even with the back bumper of the car beside you, straighten out and continue backing.

    (Watch the car behind.)

When your car's front corner has just past the corner of the car in front of you, cut the steering wheel hard the OTHER way (to the left), and back in.

    Safe motoring!
