Question:

Taking a motorcycle to college

I am on my way to Radford University and I was looking into buying a motorcycle. However I already own a car. How much trouble would it be to try and keep a car and a motorcycle at college? I don't have anywhere to store it other than with me on campus.

  1. Besides the added expense of having two vehicles to care for it sounds like a bit of a hassle. Why don't you wait until you get settled in college and get to scope out the situation first before deciding on a bike?

  2. It depends. I don't know the campus, but it would certainly be easier if you could keep a motorbike instead of a car on the campus as it takes up less space, but thats if you get on with it.

If you do take up the motorbike and find out that you find it more convenient and useful, you may be able to store your car off of campus at your mums house (for example), which you can use for bigger journeys by driving to on the bike.

    For example.

Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to learn. If it doesnt work out, then at least you'll have the skills for later in life.

  3. I had my bike and only my bike my first year of college. However, this was in TX, where we "might" get snow/ice. So, keeping it on campus was easy. Had a few days where riding was uncomfy or unsafe, but that's about it. Plus, I had plenty of buddies with cars, so bumming rides was easy.

You're headed to VA, and winters there are a little more harsh. If you don't have covered parking (at least), or a buddy with a garage, I'd pass on taking the bike. You could cover it during winter, but it's not the same as garaging.

That being said, if you can bring the bike home from school and garage it before winter hits, all the best.

My biggest "pro" on having the bike on campus (besides the attention it brought from the opposite s*x) was the fact that motorcycle parking was everywhere... unlike trying to park a car.
