Taking a reading test?

so I took the compass a couple weeks ago and I only failed the reading test be 2 points. There was one story that I couldn't understand, I seriously read it 10 times. I didn't get a word it was saying. The vocab wasn't hard, it was just how they worded it, one thing never seemed to connect with another. and they asked what a good title would be, but all the choices could be possible titles... the questions seemed a little tough and hard to understand.

I'm taking it again tomorrow, what are some tips I can use when taking it. I read a story and answer questions about it. any advice? please (:

  1. put some words in where they are needed to make a bit more sence out of it

  2. Everyone already hit the nail on the head here, but I'll give a shot too.

Read the questions before the story.

Understand the questions, & if you have scrap paper, right down a little key fact to remember what you are looking for while you read.

Read the story veryy slowly and after each paragraph, go back and try to summarize that paragraph so you have a shorter version and more consistent version in your head.

Now reread the story and try to find those answers.

While you are reading, look for themes. Those tend to be important on these tests.

Try to cross out insane answers first, then look for the best. Go back to the story and try to find it.

Look at the clock and remember what time you have!

There will always be 2 answers that both look correct.

When you get to those, go back to the story and if it's not located anywhere, then it's probably inference-based. Try to think back to your simplified version of the story and see what answer works BEST.

Hmm.. can you mark in the booklet? Don't be afraid to make some pencil marks if you need to!

Just read. Think. Don't make assumptions unless you HAVE to. Reread. Take your time. Answer everything!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll pass it [:

  3. i would try and read it aloud or maybe even rewrite it so it makes since to you :]

  4. Yeah, tests can be difficult. Always read it slowly, word for word and if possible, underline with your pen/pencil some important parts. You should also remember to always read the questions before reading the story. That way you know what to look for. =)

Try to reword the sentence so it makes sense. That may help. Good Luck!

  5. First thing you need to do if read the questions over before you read the story; that way you know what answers you are looking for. If there is something you don't understand, just ask the teacher. If that doesn't help, then you really have to concentrate and take it one sentence at a time. Don't worry how long it takes you, just concentrate on understanding the story. The answers are probably multiple choice. The best thing to do on those questions is process of elimination. You should be left with one or two answers. I know how you feel because I have trouble comprehending and understanding just as much as you do. Trust me when I say that the best thing to do is take it slow and steady and concentrate as best as you can.
