Taking a year off or going to college right after hs?

I'm in a bad situation, because my boyfriend of 3 years is a year younger than me, and so when i graduate he'll still be a senior in high school, so i plan to wait on him and just go to the local college until he graduates and then i can transfer and we can go to the out of state school we have decided on going to, but then i was thinking maybe i should just take that year off and work while waiting for him so we can start college together freshman year. I don't know which would be better.

P.S. I'm a senior right now, and my boyfriend and I are very serious about each other, so splitting up is not an option! And I know this like the wrong category for this question but i know there's always like a tone of people here and they usually have plenty of opinions and advice!

  1. its not a good thing to do...u end up not wanting to go back to school

  2. I live in Europe and I studied in the U.K (England). Over here it's very normal for people to take a gap year after finishing high school, before University (which for us, is what you call College). In fact it's becoming more and more popular. It doesn't mean you are a waster, as long as you do something constructive in that year. The first thing that comes to mind is travelling (i.e. outside the United States)..however, considering that you are delaying College to be with your bf, I imagine that option won't appeal to you. What I would suggest is an internship in whatever field you are thinking of eventually working in. This will look very good on a resumé. You need to find something that will still look attractive to future employers (it all depends on how ambitious you are, of course) but believe me, no decent employer will be impressed if you tell them you took a year out from education to wait for your bf, no matter how serious you guys are. Unexplained gaps in resumés are never a good thing and you will be expected to explain them and have a good reason for them. So, look for something that will benefit you long term. Or maybe learn or improve upon a language? If you are going to get a job, don't get a job like as a sales assistant, get a good job or as I said an internship or just something that will be of value on your resumé in the future..

and alot of ppl have mentioned that when ppl take a year out, they end up not wanting to go back. That may be more relevant if you were taking a gap between College and grad school, but anyone who has any ambition whatsoever will not be reluctant to go to College after a break for a year, because they realise that in this day and age you need at least a bachelors degree to get a good job.

  3. i am a senior too and i wanted to take a break too but from i see people dont go back once they take a break. when u go from hs to college u r use to the work but when u take a break and go back to college, its reallly hard. and if u two love each other than u should be able to stay honest and a yr differnce should not be a problem. gl though
