Question:

Taking an $8K pay cut, need tips to compensate!?

My husband is going to be going out to sea now, and for that we're getting our BAS taken away and getting about $50 sea pay in turn. This adds up to about an $8,000.00 pay cut. Any tips on compensating for this loss? I can't work because I'm taking 21 credits at college. Which we're not paying for in case anyone suggests me quitting school. I'm on full scholarship.

  1. The best way is to look for campus jobs.  They are less strenuous, and you may be able to study or do your homework while on such jobs.  They may not pay much, whatever you get, is a bonus.  Looks at campus postings, bulletin boards, departmental notices, etc./

  2. The first place to cut is the food budget.  It usually has the most "wiggle room".  No more eating out, cook at home and take your lunch to school.  If you can carpool with somebody or take public transit that will cut your gasoline costs.  As far as getting a part time job, I know it will be hard but I worked full time while taking a full load in college so it can be done.  It's not fun, but it is also temporary.  Check out the college first, there are usually many jobs available.  Talk with your professors.  Many times they need grading help or have students that need tutors.
